Mobile Photography Competition organized by NC Environment Club on May 3, 2024 at National College, Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu.

Nirvig Baniya, Student, BDevS 2023 Batch, Winner

The picture is of a plastic bottle being used as a lampshade at Pulchowk University during an art exhibition program.

This relates to the theme as it helps reduce waste the bottle that would’ve ended up in a landfill is being used as a lampshade, and using recycled materials helps reduce the amount of plastic waste in landfills and the environment. In addition to this reusing the plastic bottle has helped in resource conservation as fewer new materials are required, conserving resources that would otherwise be used in the production of the lampshade.

The recycled water bottle lamp shades can serve as a tangible example of sustainability, raising awareness and encouraging others to adopt similar practices. Repurposing existing materials into functional items promotes a culture of creativity and sustainability, encouraging others to think of alternative uses for discarded items.

Aakriti Bharati, Student, BDevS 2021 Batch, Runner Up

The first picture shows the concept of Reusing and Recycling the plastic CDs which would have gone to the bin otherwise. The second picture is of a woman in a semi-rural area of our country where she is cleaning turmeric.

For the first picture, the CDs had been upcycled and it’s a practice of sustainability where the waste is being reduced, reused, and recycled. In this generation where DVDs are vanishing, this door is decorated creatively and artistically.
The second picture depicts the sustainable aspect of Nepali culture, how we make pickles of dried vegetables, fruits, and flowers. It also shows that we have been increasing the shelf life of the food for a very long period and it has been in practice even before the term “sustainability” itself was introduced. It shows how even the tiniest thing that we tend to ignore or normalize is a GREAT example of sustainable practice.
